What is the thing that causes man most anguish in his life; his mother in law, his wife, his children? Terrible though these things may be, they pale into insignificance when facing that dreadful day, when he wakes up and asks himself, who am I, what am I, why am I; and should I get a twenty one year old girlfriend and a sports car. Followed quickly by the realization that he could never afford a twenty one year old girlfriend or a sports car.
Such are the thoughts beginning to enter the mind of Mike, an Englishman living in America. With Christmas fast approaching, and a feeling of despair and despondency approaching even faster, Mike is surprised by the arrival of a postcard from England. An old friend is moving to a new house. Mike sees this information as a chance to go back to England, a chance to get back to his roots and find his purpose in life, a chance to be, once again, the man he was; suave, sophisticated, and British.
When an unexpected event gives Mike the opportunity to go with his wife’s blessing, Mike feels that Santa has given him an early Christmas present. As we humorously learn more about Mike, his wife and his friends, and join him on his trip back to England; we find out, as does Mike, that his life is what it should be and couldn’t be better.

This was an easy read that charmed and delighted me. The simple plot works as a vessel for a series of colorful anecdotes. Throughout, the narrator offers wry commentary and wit. I cannot wait to read the next installment!Product details

The British are such an odd lot. This book shows you how funny they are. Yet they do try their best to cope with the world.
Hampton was such a fun romp through time with the very talented and humorous author, Michael Davies. I enjoyed reading this book so much. I keep wondering when the next one comes out???
