A Brief Historical Sketch of the town of Vinalhaven Anonymous Me Centennial committee Vinlhaven 9781117647906 Books
This is a collection of hearsay and documented history. It was not anonymously written, as the review told me. It was written in 1889 by the centennial committee of Vinalhaven, comprised of 5 men, with a later addition by (Mrs) Albra Vinal Smith, though where her contribution begins and ends isn't marked. I trace my ancestry to many of the island's original white settlers, so I found it very interesting. It starts with a "Description and Population" section at the beginning that documents the early history of European and American settlements on Vinalhaven, followed by the entire text of the islanders' petition to the Massachusetts legislature requesting ownership rights to the land they occupied. There isn't much about the native Americans who populated the islands; the consensus is that the islands were unoccupied in the 1760s when the first white people came to live there. The book also contains synopses of town meetings starting in 1788 (one year before the island was incorporated). Then there's a history of the town officers: lists of who was who for each year from 1790 to 1889, followed by brief biographies of important townspeople. There's also a bit on the history of Matinicus Isle, including a letter of complaint from the Penobscot Indians to Governor Phips, and a page on what happened as a result. There's a short section on the ecclesiastical history and a listing of the various societies that thrived on the island: Masons, IOOF, Temperance Unions, the Grand Army of the Republic, etc. There's a list of soldiers and war expenses related to the Civil War and the war of 1812. Then some interesting information on the various industries: the net factory, fishing, canning factory, lobster fishing, granite quarrying, mills, and ship building. Lastly there's an appendix of more citizens of importance.I have the free ebook version of this book, but being an old fart, I wanted a print copy. Frankly, I think it's overpriced. It looks exactly like the ebook version, except the print is fainter and harder to read. It is the exact same text, so if you have the ebook, all you lack is the cover and the ability to access it without a computer.
